Veteran Statistics

  • Veterans have a strong track record of homeownership when PROPERLY SUPPORTED. This data is proof programs do work.

  • The VA & partners housed 47,925 veterans - 96% remain stably housed.

  • 20% of Veterans do not own their own home. With the cost of renting so high they need to consider owning their own home sometimes for less than the cost of renting.

  • The supply of veteran-affordable home dropped from 53% to 21.8% in the last 10 years alone.

  • Many veterans rely on fixed income or disability benefits, making rising costs even harder to absorb in their budget.

  • 67% of Veterans plan to buy a home within 3 years if they can.

  • 649,939 Veterans live in Illinois

  • On any given day there are OVER 1,000 homeless Veterans in Illinois.

  • The veteran homeownership pathway is narrowing, & high monthly payments with a lack of affordable supply often put VA buyers at a competitive disadvantage in competitive markets.

Housing Statistics

  • First time home buyers are now 40 years old (record high).

  • New homes under $200,000 no longer exist in our region yet our homes in our pilot project for veterans will be $200,000.

  • Seniors are now the fastest-growing homeless population in the U.S.

  • Homelessness for adults 55+ is projected to triple in five years.

  • 50% of all Veterans are age 65 or older as of 2022.

  • 1st time home buyers are down to 21% from a norm of 40%.

  • 1 in 3 Illinois households age 65+ are housing cost burdened, meaning they spend over 30% of their income on housing.

  • 1 in 5 households are severely cost burdened - spending over 50% of their income just on housing alone.

  • Starter size home inventory is down over 70% since 2011.

  • Delaying homeownership by 10 years destroys an estimated $150,000 in lifetime home equity.

  • Veteran Homes of Honor's model addresses the exact gaps causing the crisis & provides a meaningful pathway to stable, sustainable homeownership for vulnerable residents.
